Xiaomi’s latest Redmi phones under 10000 or 15000 targeting to make 7 million sales in 2017
Xiaomi was founded in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun in China. Just 5 years after its inception, this Chinese mobile phone brand has not only managed to bag the number one position in China, but also is ranked 5th in the world as per the International Data Corporation. Soon after ruling the Chinese market, the brand with an urge to make its mark in the Indian market, entered India in 2014. Some brilliant marketing strategies have led to Xiaomi Redmi models’ meteoric rise among the top selling mobile phones in India. As per a report published in Economic Times last year, Xiaomi had clocked record sales of over 2 million Redmi phones in India by end of 2016 and is targeting sale of 7 million units of Redmi Note 4 by the end of 2017.
This Chinese smartphone had managed to double its smartphone sales in India last year and surpassed $1 billion (6,700 crore) in revenues. It is targeting to become the country’s largest smartphone company within five years and the major reason being the Redmi mobiles are extremely cheap as compared to Samsung and other leading Android phones. Xiaomi currently has a manufacturing plant along with Foxconn at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh.
Xiaomi India business head had this to say,
“I would want Xiaomi to become number one in overall smartphone sales volume perspective in India in 3-5 years. We are looking to open one or two new factories with similar capacities to double or triple our capacities either at Sri City itself or elsewhere in the country with Foxconn. We have already invested hundreds of millions dollars in India over last few years and India will remain our first priority outside Mainland China. We will continue to invest hundreds of millions of dollars on manufacturing, warehouses, logistics, call centres and service centres in India.”
Xiaomi last month had announced that it is planning to create around 20,000 jobs in India. Current statistics reveal that about 90% of its latest Redmi phones under 10000 or 15000 sales in India are from online channels, while less than 10% is offline. Every week Xiaomi ships its Redmi mobiles to around 14,000 pin codes, close to 40% of the country’s total.
After entering into Indian market, the company had opened its first plant in August 2015 and by March 2016, over 75% of its phones were being manufactured in India. As of today, more than 95% of Xiaomi smartphones sold in India are made in India. The numbers the company has garnered since its launch are impeccable. Not only in terms of sales, but the quality, and the warranty offered on all the product offerings is what attracted the customers to the bigger picture. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the founder of Xiaomi, Lei Jun had said that the smartphone brand is now planning to have a combined production capacity of one phone per second during operational hours. He further added that since online is a small piece as compared to the vast Indian market, Xiaomi will now work towards targeting 50% of its total sales in India to come from the offline market.
